How to Format a Ghazal

How the Ghazal Formatting Works

The formatter reads your text line by line. For each line it removes leading and trailing spaces and turns any run of spaces or tabs into a single space, so words no longer drift apart. Empty lines are set aside at this stage, because the tool rebuilds the spacing itself.

Once the misras are clean, the formatter lays them out again. With couplet grouping on, it places two misras together as one she’r, then adds a single blank line before the next couplet. This gives the even, breathing layout that a ghazal is meant to have, whatever mess the original paste carried.

Grouping Misras Into Couplets

If your ghazal has an odd number of misras, the last line is kept on its own so nothing is lost. This can happen when a matla or a stray line slips in, and the visible count of misras and couplets helps you spot it. Turn grouping off when you want a plain, single-spaced list of lines instead.

Good to know: couplet grouping simply pairs lines two at a time, so it assumes each misra sits on its own line. If two misras share a line, or one misra wraps onto two lines, split or join them first so the pairing matches your intended couplets.
