What the Urdu Poetry Word Counter Does

The Urdu Poetry Word Counter measures your shayari as you write it. It reports four figures at once: the total words, the unique words, the misras, and the average words per line, so you always know the size and density of your verse.

The counter is built for Urdu. It uses Unicode-aware rules, so a run of Urdu letters counts as one word, and stray punctuation is not counted. This gives a count that matches what a reader would count by eye.

Everything runs on your own device. Your poetry is never uploaded or stored, so it is safe for unpublished work and private drafts.

How to Count Your Words

  1. Type or paste your shayari. Add your verse to the box. The direction is set for right-to-left Urdu.
  2. Watch the counts update. The four figures change live as you type, so you see the size at every step.
  3. Use one misra per line. This gives the clearest line count and a fair average per line.
  4. Copy the counts. Press Copy Result to place a short summary on your clipboard.
اپنا کلام لکھیں یا پیسٹ کریں۔ کل الفاظ، منفرد الفاظ، مصرعے اور فی سطر اوسط الفاظ فوراً دکھائی دیتے ہیں۔ صاف گنتی کے لیے ہر مصرع الگ سطر میں رکھیں۔

How Words Are Counted

The counter finds words by looking for runs of letters, marks, and numbers, using Unicode rules. This means a joined Urdu word counts as one, while spaces and punctuation act as separators and are not counted themselves.

Because it follows Unicode rather than simple spaces, the count handles mixed Urdu and English, numbers, and joined letters correctly. A comma or a full stop on its own is never counted as a word, so the total reflects the real words in your verse.

Unique Words and Repetition

Alongside the total, the tool counts the unique words, which is the number of different words in your verse. Comparing the total with the unique count shows how much a poem repeats, which is common and often deliberate in Urdu poetry.

A refrain, a radif, or a repeated phrase lifts the total above the unique count. Seeing both figures helps you judge whether a repetition adds music or simply pads the line, so you can keep what works and trim what does not.

Reading Your Word Counts

The four cards give a full picture at a glance. Words shows the total, unique words shows the variety, misras shows the lines with text, and words per line shows the average density of your verse.

Because the counts update live, you can trim a line and watch the numbers change at once. The average per line is useful when you want your misras to feel even, since a line far from the average may read long or short.

A Worked Counting Example

A single she’r by Ghalib:

دل ہی تو ہے نہ سنگ و خشت درد سے بھر نہ آئے کیوں روئیں گے ہم ہزار بار کوئی ہمیں ستائے کیوں

The live counter is preparing this example…

The figures above come from the same function the tool uses, so the example reflects real behaviour. Press Load Example to try it in the box yourself.

Why Word Counts Matter for Poetry

Length shapes how a verse is used. A poetry card or a caption reads best at a certain length, and a word count tells you at once whether a she’r will fit or need trimming before you post it.

Word counts also help when you set verse into a fixed space, or when you compare two drafts by size. The unique count adds a second view, showing how varied the language is, which is useful when you want a tight, fresh line rather than a repetitive one.

Who Uses This Word Counter

Social media writers use it to keep a she’r within a caption length. Card makers use it to judge whether a verse will fit a design. Students use it to measure a poem while they study its language and density.

Editors and poets use it to compare drafts and to check repetition through the unique count. In every case the live figures make the size of the verse clear without any counting by hand.

Accuracy and Limits of the Counter

The result is deterministic. The same text always returns the same counts. The tool measures your text only. It does not check meter, rhyme, or spelling, and it does not change your words.

Good to know: the unique count treats words that are spelt differently as different, even if they share a root, and it ignores case for mixed English. A misra is counted as any non-empty line, so if two misras share a line, they count as one.

Privacy and Data Processing

The counter runs fully in your browser with standard web technology. Your poetry is not uploaded or stored, and it is not sent to any analytics service. Only your star rating is sent, to record the tool’s rating. When you close the page, your text is gone.
