How to Calculate Reading Time

How the Reading Time Is Worked Out

The calculator first counts the words in your text using Unicode-aware rules, so runs of Urdu letters are grouped correctly and stray punctuation is not counted. This word count is the base for every estimate.

The silent reading time is the word count divided by your chosen reading speed in words per minute. The aloud time uses a slower pace, since reading verse out loud, with its pauses and rhythm, takes longer than reading it silently. Both times are shown in minutes and seconds.

The tool measures and estimates only. It does not change your text, and the same words with the same speed always give the same times.
