How to Clean Marks

The Three Marks

The left-to-right mark behaves like an invisible left-to-right character, the right-to-left mark like an invisible right-to-left one, and the Arabic letter mark like an invisible Arabic character. None of them takes visible space, but each can nudge the direction of the text around it.

Why They Are Used

A directional mark is sometimes added on purpose to fix the direction of a lone number or a bracket in mixed text. More often it slips in when copying from a page or a document, where it does nothing useful and just clutters the stored text.

When to Keep a Mark

If a mark is fixing the layout of a number next to Urdu, removing it could make the number sit oddly. When your text mixes direction, check the result after cleaning, and add a mark back only where it is needed.

Accuracy and Limits

The cleaner removes exactly the directional marks you choose, by their code points, and keeps everything else unchanged. It does not remove the embeddings, overrides, or isolates; for those, use the bidi control character cleaner.
