The Non-Breaking Characters

The detector looks for the non-breaking space, the narrow non-breaking space often used before units, the figure space the width of a digit, the word joiner that glues without a space, the non-breaking hyphen, and the zero-width no-break space. Each keeps the text on one line at that point.

Why They Cause Trouble

A non-breaking character is useful to keep a number with its unit, or a name together. It causes trouble when it slips in unnoticed, since it looks like a space but the line will not wrap there, which can push text off the edge or leave odd gaps.

The Marked-Up Copy

Accuracy and Limits

The detector finds the non-breaking characters by their code points, exactly. It does not flag the ordinary space, which breaks normally. To replace what it finds with ordinary spaces, the invisible character cleaner does the job.

Good to know: the zero-width no-break space is also used at the start of a file as a byte order mark.
