WhatsApp Typing Indicator Upgrade: Group Chats Get New Feature

WhatsApp is improving group chat interactions with a new typing indicator upgrade that shows how many people are typing at the same time. The change is designed to give users a clearer sense of real-time group activity.

As reported by WABetaInfo, the feature is being tested in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.20.17, available on the Google Play Store.

Until now, Meta’s popular messaging app only displayed the name of one person typing in the chat list, meaning users had to open the group to see other replies in progress.

With this update, WhatsApp now displays a message like “2 people typing” in the chat list, allowing for quicker and more engaging conversations without opening the chat. This is particularly useful in large or active groups, where several members might be composing messages at once.

The new upgrade, however, applies only to text input. If multiple participants are recording voice notes simultaneously, WhatsApp will still show only one person’s name in the chat list, as before.

By making typing activity more visible, WhatsApp helps users judge whether to check in immediately or wait until the flow of messages slows. It can also signal when a group chat is reacting to something important in real time.

The feature is gradually rolling out to more beta users and will become available to a wider audience in the coming weeks.
