The Markup Formula
The profit is the selling price less the cost price, and the markup is the profit divided by the cost price, times one hundred. So a cost of 2000 rupees and a selling price of 2500 gives a 500 rupee profit, and a markup of 500 divided by 2000, times 100, which is 25 percent.
Markup and Margin
Markup and margin use the same profit but a different base. Markup is the profit as a share of the cost, while margin is the profit as a share of the selling price. For the same sale, the markup percentage is larger than the margin percentage.
