The Pairs It Checks

The checker knows the common pairs: round brackets, square brackets, and curly brackets, along with the angle quotation marks and the curved opening and closing quotes. For the plain straight quote, which looks the same at the start and the end, it cannot tell an opener from a closer, so it checks that the number of them is even instead.

How the Check Works

The checker walks through your text from start to finish and keeps a stack of the openers it has seen. When it meets a closer, it checks that the most recent opener matches; if it does, the pair is cleared, and if it does not, the mark is flagged. Anything left on the stack at the end is an opener with no closer. This is the same method a computer uses to read code, so it is exact.

Why Matching Matters

Brackets and quotes come in pairs for a reason: the reader needs to know where an aside or a quotation begins and ends. A stray opener leaves the reader waiting for a close that never comes, and in technical or legal writing an unmatched bracket can change the meaning outright. Matching them keeps the text clear and correct.

Accuracy and Limits

The checker matches brackets and directional quotes exactly, by the same stack method a computer uses, so those flags are precise. For the plain straight quote it can only count, since the opening and closing form are identical; an odd count is a sure sign of a missing one, but it cannot point to which.
