Because it looks for blank lines, the count reflects your intended structure rather than the raw line breaks. A paragraph that wraps across several lines still counts as one, as long as there is no blank line inside it.

Sentences and Words

Alongside paragraphs, the tool counts sentences by the full stops, question marks, and exclamation marks that end them. This is a helpful guide to how your text is broken up, though it is an estimate, since informal writing does not always end every thought with a mark.

It also counts words with Unicode rules, so a run of letters counts as one word and punctuation does not. This works for Roman Urdu, English, and a mix of the two, giving a count that matches what a reader would count by eye.
