How the Percentage Works

The percentage is the score expressed out of a hundred, which is the fairest way to compare quizzes of different lengths. The calculator works out the highest score possible, the total questions times the marks each is worth, and then shows your score as a share of that maximum. A quiz of ten questions and a quiz of fifty questions become directly comparable, because both are reported on the same scale.

Marks Per Question

Not every quiz gives one mark per question. Some weight each question more heavily, giving two, five, or ten marks apiece. The calculator lets you set the marks per correct answer, and it multiplies your correct count by that figure to build the raw score. The percentage still comes out on a scale of a hundred, so changing the marks per question changes the raw score but keeps the percentage meaningful.

Negative Marking

Many tests discourage guessing by taking marks away for a wrong answer. The calculator supports this with a penalty per wrong answer. It counts the wrong answers as the total minus the correct ones, multiplies them by the penalty, and subtracts that from the score earned on the correct answers. Set the penalty to zero for a quiz that does not use negative marking, or to the value your test uses when it does.

The Grade Bands

To make a percentage easier to read, the calculator sorts it into a grade band, from the top mark down to a fail. The bands follow a common scheme: the highest grades sit above ninety and eighty percent, the middle grades step down through the seventies, sixties, and fifties, and a pass mark sits at forty percent. These bands are a widely used guide; if your school or exam uses a different scale, read the percentage, which is exact, rather than the band.

Accuracy and Limits

The calculator does exact arithmetic, so the score, percentage, and grade follow directly from the numbers you enter. The grade bands are a common guide, not a fixed standard.
