A medical helicopter crashed in Mississippi on Monday, killing three people on board – a pilot and two hospital staff members.
The accident happened around 12:30 pm local time, near where Highway 43 meets the Natchez Trace Parkway. The crash site was in a thickly wooded area, located between the southern edge of the Parkway and the northern boundary of Pipeline Road.
“This afternoon, an AirCare helicopter had an accident in Madison County, north of the Ross Barnett Reservoir. There were two crew members from UMMC and a Med-Trans pilot on board. No patients were on board. Law enforcement and first response teams have arrived at the scene, and families are being notified. We will provide more information as soon as we can,” said a statement.
Although the families of those who died have been informed, their names have not been made public.
Various emergency response teams rushed to the accident site in the wooded area. These included officers from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Madison Police Department. Additionally, Madison County Emergency Operations worked with fire services from Gluckstadt and Pearl Fire Departments. The Mississippi Highway Patrol was also present, along with several other firefighting units while officials from the Federal Aviation Administration were heading to the location.
“It’s a tragic reminder of the risks that Mississippi’s first responders take every day to keep us safe,” said Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves on Facebook. “Our state will always remember the sacrifice of these heroes.”
The medical university and the authorities have not yet explained why the crash occurred.
