The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has called for the publication of the investigation report on the 2017 Faizabad sit-in after the inquiry commission cleared former Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hamid of any wrongdoing.

The PTI, once the ruling party, also urged the top judiciary to take action against those responsible for the Faizabad sit-in and to enforce the recommendations made by the inquiry commission.

According to a spokesperson from the party founded by Imran Khan, the contents of the inquiry report are crucial for several reasons, and it is the nation’s fundamental right to know the verified details of the report.

The party also stated that the commission found the then-chief minister of Punjab, Shehbaz Sharif—who is the current Prime Minister—and his provincial government culpable based on testimonies from ex-premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal, among others.

The PTI spokesperson demanded that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif resign and be held accountable for his “criminal mistakes.” Furthermore, the party called for criminal cases to be registered against the current premier and his cabinet, following the commission’s recommendations.

The PTI emphasized the importance of disclosing information about the involvement of various institutions in national politics to the public.

In a related development, General (Retd) Faiz Hamid was exonerated by the inquiry commission, which was led by Dr. Akhtar Ali Shah and included other high-profile officials. The commission was set up by the Supreme Court to investigate the 2017 Faizabad protest led by the former chief of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), Khadim Hussain Rizvi.

The investigation found that then-army chief and ISI director general had authorized Hamid to act as an arbitrator, and that former PM Abbasi and then-interior minister Iqbal had consented to the agreement mediated by Hamid, which led to the dispersal of the demonstrators.

The report, however, stated that there was no evidence linking any government official or state institution to the facilitation of the protest, and it recommended action against then-Punjab IG Arif Nawaz for providing false statements and engaging in misconduct.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, however, dismissed the report from the Faizabad inquiry as neither authentic nor reliable.
