Google recently launched its “Find My Device” service for Android users.
This innovative service helps users to locate their phones or other devices that they have lost or misplaced. It does this by tapping into a global network of over one billion Android devices, as reported by Life Hacker.
So, how does this feature work? If you lose a device that’s connected, any Android phone close by will automatically link with it through Bluetooth.
This link helps update the device’s location on the “Find My Device” network, alerting the device owner to its current or last known location when it was connected to another Android device.
This functionality is also accessible offline on devices like the Google Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro. Remarkably, even if your device runs out of battery, it can still be tracked with “Find My Device.”
Additionally, you can find your phone using other personal gadgets like Nest devices. If your lost device is near your Google smart home devices, you can quickly locate it using the “Find nearby” option.
Currently, the service is only available to users in the United States and Canada and is limited to Android phones and tablets. However, Google plans to extend this network to include compatible Bluetooth devices starting in May.
Google is also developing a feature that would allow users to share items, such as TV remotes or car keys, with others.
