How to Test a Field

The Three Field Types

A text input is a single line, a textarea holds several lines, and a search box is a special input often used for queries. They can behave a little differently with Urdu, especially at the ends, so this tester shows all three together rather than one at a time.

Right-to-Left or Automatic

Setting a field to right-to-left makes the text start from the right, which is correct for Urdu. Setting it to automatic lets the browser pick the direction from the first strong character, which suits a field that might hold either Urdu or English.

The Caret and Placeholder

In a right-to-left field, the caret starts on the right and the placeholder sits on the right too. As you type Urdu, the caret moves leftward along the line. Watching this in the live fields is the quickest way to check that a field feels right for Urdu users.
